paavakka kichedi (bitter guard) Recipe

Bitter guard kichedi is a traditional dish in Kerala. It is a side dish for sadya. Normally people don’t like to prepare because of bitterness. But I am guaranteed that there is no bitter taste like other recipes of bitter guard. Easy to make and healthy dish. Bitter guard kichedi is made of coconut and yoghurt(curd).



  • Bitter  guard medium size-1
  • Grated coconut-1/2 cup
  • curd-1 cup
  • green chilly-2
  • curry leaves
  • coconut oil-for deep fry
  • mustard seeds-1 tsp
  • red chilly-2
  • salt to taste

How to Make Pasavakka kitchedi

  • Cut the bitter guard as thin round shape.paavakka kichedi 041
  • Deep fry in a pan till goden brown. Crush the fried bitter guard.
  • paavakka kichedi 046Grind the coconut with yoghurt. Then with mustard seeds.
  • paavakka kichedi 043paavakka kichedi 045Add the coconut paste into the crushed paavakka. Add salt and mix. Do not cook then.
  • splutter mustard seeds in another pan, add red chilly and curry leaves. Mix with kichedi.
