PARIPPU VADA പരിപ്പുവട is a favorite tea time delight in Kerala. A cup of black tea with crunchy and crispy parippuvada is a real time refreshment at the afternoon tea time.


  • Thoor Dal (തുവരപ്പരിപ്പ്) – 1 cup
  • Chana Dal (കടലപ്പരിപ്പ്) – 1 cup
  • Shallots or Onion – ½ cup, finely chopped
  • Ginger, finely chopped – 1 tbsp
  • Dry Red Chilli – 5 no, finely chopped
  • Asafetida – a pinch
  • Curry Leaves – a few, finely chopped
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – for deep frying


  • Soak Dal in water for about 3 hours
  • Drain the water completely and grind it coarsely without adding water
  • Add all the remaining ingredients except oil and mix it gently
  • Make small balls of the mixture and keep aside
  • Heat oil in a frying pan. (use only medium heat)
  • Take each ball in your left palm, press and flatten it with your right palm, put slowly in the hot oil and deep fry until it becomes golden brown
  • Serve hot with tea
